Thanks for the feedback. I tried to keep it balanced after having read so many unbalanced ones in the past. If you ever have any suggestions or corrections then I would be happy to include them in the article if relevant.

In response to Hongli Lai, at the time of writing there were no good shared hosts available and I only heard bad things about those that existed. I am glad to hear that things have moved along since then and I have included a reference to Dreamhosts in the article, so that people may go and take a look for themselves.

Thanks again,
Landon.

You're right on with the 'smugness' part. It turned me off for years... Overall a very nice, well balanced write-up. Thanks.

Very nice article. The performance part that you quoted from Antonio is spot-on. Despite Ruby's lower performance, it's use is still justified for many projects.

<I>"If you are going to use shared hosting to actually host your application then don’t bother with Rails at all. Rails was never really designed for that intention and it shows but you could happily use a virtual machine."</I>

Are you sure? Dreamhost switched to Phusion Passenger about 2 months ago, and ever since then I've only heard good things from people who have attempted to host Rails apps on Dreamhost.

Excellent article, and a very fair summary of the criticisms of Ruby and Rails, both valid and invalid.

Thanks!
